Making A House A Home
Whether you have lived in your home for a couple of months or a few decades, certain things just make a house feel cosier – more like it’s YOURS, you know? And it’s these little touches that create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for yourself, your family or your guests. And while the home is always created by the people who live there, I thought I’d share a few more things that bring in personality and warmth and ones which, in my opinion.
Whether it’s a picture from a holiday with your best friend or a photo of your child taking its first steps, photos of those we love and things we’ve achieved creates a monologue of our lives. It can be a vast collection on a feature wall or a few printed off and put on your fridge but no matter how you decide to arrange them, they’ll always deliver a smile to your face.
I always try to get a little something to stick in my bag whenever I’ve been abroad, these small tokens act as stories of my travels and keep those memories vivid. It also produces a bit more of an eclectic feel to my home with a blend of styles. But certainly, you should only choose to present those items you like – don’t trouble too much about whether they ‘match’. They are all layers of your life and produce a much more personal quality to your home.
Greenery will always add life to a room and arranging plants and flowers is a great way to show off your personal style. So whether you are going for a more laidback boho look with hanging pots or want a more Scandinavian style with structured plants, choose plants you love and bring the outdoors in!
It may seem an unusual choice but as someone who loves to cook from scratch, I am forever interested to see what sorts of spices people use in their kitchen! A spice rack will show off your culinary prowess.
The saying goes you can learn a lot about a person solely by the books he or she reads, recognising their interests, desires and what they enjoy for work or play. So for me, there are interior design books all over the place but there are also things like the off autobiography, marketing books, dramatic fiction and lots more. What do your books tell you?
There’s nothing like relaxing in front of the T.V on a cold evening and wrapping up warm. Build a cosy, comforting environment with throws the whole family can gather under and infuse some warmth into your home.
Wear and Tear
Life isn't perfect, so why pretend our home is? The home we live in should be loved and there should, and will evidence of this. So a rug that’s been worn in from lots of comings and goings or that sticky lock that we have to wiggle just right to make it unlock may seem annoying but these are the things that show us our home is lived in and memories are being created. Embrace the imperfections in your home because they are is a symbol of life being lived!
A scent is such an intimate thing and what we decide to put on our bodies by way of perfumes and body sprays creates an impression on people around us. Choosing a scent you love for your home creates an atmosphere and accordingly appeals to one of our senses that is often overlooked when we create our style. You could use a room diffuser, candles you love or even boiling orange peels and cinnamon on a stove or making a welcoming pot of coffee.
Whether they damage your furniture, leave ‘deposits’ on your favourite rug or shed everywhere, pets are still and always will be an excellent addition to any family. They introduce a warm and cosy vibe to our home which means we forgive them for their downfalls. As a nation of pet lovers, bringing a furry companion home is another way to bring life and character to our homes.
